It is 10 PM in BKK1. Your tuk-tuk has just pulled away, and the guesthouse owner sends a KHQR code to your WhatsApp with three words: "deposit pls, thanks." You can't point your camera at your own screen, so the answer is to save the image and import it into an app that pays the national QR network: KHQR in Cambodia, DuitNow QR in Malaysia.
What is actually inside the QR code your guesthouse sent?
Paying from a screenshot is simple once you see that the code is just data. KHQR, part of Cambodia's Bakong system, and Malaysia's DuitNow QR are both built on the global EMVCo standard. The square encodes who gets paid and, sometimes, how much.
- Static code: carries only the account. You type the amount, such as 25 USD or 100,000 riel in Phnom Penh, or RM180 for two nights in Chinatown.
- Dynamic code: has the amount built in, and some dynamic codes expire.
Think of the code as a pre-addressed envelope. A screenshot copies the address perfectly, but nothing moves until you post it through the network. The screenshot carries no live verification. The guesthouse learns you paid when the credit appears in its own bank or wallet app. Your forwarded receipt does not prove anything on its own.
The local bank apps that pay these codes usually require a Cambodian or Malaysian bank account and phone number, which most visitors don't have. Moreta builds Moreta Pay, a travel wallet that pays both networks directly. It reads QR codes imported from photos or screenshots, shows you the merchant name, amount and exchange rate before you confirm, and pays the guesthouse in local currency. You don't need a local bank account or SIM.
How do you scan a QR code from your gallery?
Since the code is only an address, any app that pays the right network can read it from a saved image. You do not need the camera. In Moreta Pay:
- Open the image in WhatsApp and save it to your photos.
- Open Moreta Pay, go to Pay, and choose to import the code from your photos.
- Select the screenshot. For a static code, enter the amount the guesthouse quoted.
- Check the merchant name, amount and exchange rate on the review screen.
- Slide to pay. Then send the owner your receipt, which shows the merchant name, merchant ID and payment number.
You fund the wallet in your own currency first. The options are US ACH, SEPA (EUR), UK Faster Payments (GBP), Canadian Interac e-Transfer (CAD), Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Of the two cities in this guide, USDC/USDT on Solana can fund payments in Kuala Lumpur only; stablecoin funding is not available for Cambodia.
Why won't the screenshot scan?
Most failures come from the image itself, not the payment network.
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry or blocky code | WhatsApp compresses photos | Ask for the code sent as a document |
| Code cut off | A notification banner or a tight crop hides the edges | Re-screenshot with a white border around the code |
| "Expired" or wrong amount | Dynamic codes can time out | Ask for a fresh code |
| Code won't pay | The image shows one app's branding, not KHQR or DuitNow | Ask the owner for their KHQR or DuitNow QR code |
| Payment blocked in Cambodia | Your balance came from stablecoins | Top up by bank transfer or card |
How do you know the QR code really came from your guesthouse?
A screenshot carries no proof of who made it, and that is its weak point. Anyone can generate a valid code for their own account and message it from an unknown number.
- Compare the WhatsApp number with the one on your booking confirmation.
- Read the merchant name on the review screen. It should match the guesthouse or its owner.
- Never share one-time passwords, card numbers or banking details in a chat. Don't approve payment requests you don't recognise, and block and report suspicious senders.
Moreta Pay requires your confirmation in the app for every payment, so a code alone can't move your money.
What is the cheapest way to pay a guesthouse in Kuala Lumpur or Phnom Penh?
Safety comes first. Cost comes second, and the useful test is whether you can see the rate before you commit. A guesthouse bill is a good place to apply that test.
| Option | Who sets the rate | What you see before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Moreta Pay on KHQR or DuitNow QR | Live rate plus a 1.5% fee, as Moreta reports | Amount, rate and merchant name |
| Foreign card at the front-desk terminal | Your card network, plus any fee your bank charges | Often nothing until your statement |
| Card terminal offering your home currency (DCC) | The terminal's provider | A converted total at a rate you didn't choose |
| ATM cash | The network, plus any operator fee | The operator's fee screen |
Dynamic currency conversion shows up at Phnom Penh ATMs and Bukit Bintang card terminals alike. Decline it every time and choose to be charged in riel, dollars or ringgit. A multi-currency travel wallet only helps if it pays the local network directly. If it pays through the card terminal, you are back to the card's terms.
Moreta lists Malaysia's limits as RM12,000 per payment and RM24,000 per week. Cambodia's limits are shown in the app before you pay.
Where do you still need cash in Phnom Penh and Kuala Lumpur?
QR coverage solves the deposit, but it does not cover every moment of the trip. A QR payment needs mobile data or Wi-Fi at the moment you pay. Donation boxes don't scan at all.
- Phnom Penh: Dollars and riel circulate together, so keep a few small US bills and some riel. You'll want them for the tuk-tuk home from the Russian Market and the donation box at Wat Phnom.
- Kuala Lumpur: Keep a couple of RM10 notes for temple donations and anywhere your signal drops.
What should you set up before you check in?
Do these three things before you board:
- Verify your identity. You need a passport and a selfie. Moreta says this usually takes a few minutes.
- Top up by bank transfer. Moreta lists bank transfers as free above a threshold.
- Save the guesthouse's WhatsApp number from your booking platform. Then you can check any code you receive against it.
